chapter twenty six

An additional bed was brought into Brae’s and Lorah’s room for Sorvus. Even though she was tired, sleep eluded her. Since she arrived in Northbrook so much had happened. It both thrilled and frightened her. Maybe all the stimulation had made her restless. It didn’t help that she couldn’t get Darius out of her mind. Would he ever be with her as a mate should? Would she find the book the gods wanted, and if she did, would she be able to steal it from Lucius? What of the watchman Acronis spoke of? Did I already meet this person among the people here at the fortress? So many questions filled her mind. She lay awake for hours until finally sleep found her.

The next day everyone else began their day as usual, and Sorvus tried to stay out of everyone’s way and felt the odd one out. Darius had insisted she rest before more questions were thrown her way, but she couldn’t seem to rest and looked forward to getting everything out in the open. Maybe she could start to have a life here among these people once everything was said and done.

Sorvus knew King Wharick was grinding at the bit to talk more with her but he respected Darius’s wishes to give her some time.

She strolled around outside, observing the fortress, and was impressed how it seemed like a shelter, a real home, to all the people here and would be a home to anyone who fled from evil uprising in the outlying areas.

Daily the Gwarda brought in the wounded and helped them, as people tried to make their way through the forest and were caught up in traps set by Lucius or found themselves at the receiving end of a beast attack.

Sorvus overheard Wharick and some of the Gwarda talking about their forces having a stronger presence in the towns of Aldwich, Johobin, and others. The king wanted to make it known to the people that the Gwarda were here to protect them and to fight for them. The beasts in the forest still had to be contained, and Wharick strived to find a balance. More men meant more areas they could cover.

Sorvus liked the king very much. In her eyes he was patient, kind, yet authoritative when needed to be. She couldn’t have been more proud of Wharick and the entire Gwarda race. So much good had come from their creation. Whether or not those in the fortress noticed it or not, a village was forming inside the Surchin forest, expanding and becoming more productive. She couldn’t help but want to be a part of the efforts being done here to help others and find a home here among the people.

After a few days of rest, Sorvus once again settled in Brae’s room to sleep. She was told her cabin would be ready tomorrow and was excited to have a place of her own. A quietness settled within the walls of the keep, a stillness of night with faint rustling sounds that came with the comforts of sleep.
